The high-level roundtable of 25 May showed the health and security challenges of trafficking, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need for concerted action including the creation of WADA. Although Africa is home to 17% of the world's population, only 3% of the medicines consumed by its inhabitants are produced on the continent.
The launch of WADA is progressing steadily, thanks to the unfailing commitment of the African Union and its Special Envoy, Michel Sidibé. Ratification of the treaty by the signatory states of theLomé Initiative is scheduled for January 2020.
Brazzaville Foundation supports signatory countries of the Lomé Initiative in ratifying international treaties and conventions (WADA, MEDICRIME) and setting up national plans to combat counterfeit medicines.
