World Elephant Day: species still in danger

20200812-Elephant

August 12 is World Elephant Day. The lives of these enormous and fascinating animals are threatened by poaching and habitat loss. Present in Africa and Asia, the elephant population has declined considerably since the 19th century, and several species are now on the endangered species list.

In Africa, there are around 415,000 elephants, compared with 3 to 5 million at the beginning of the 20th century. Some 20,000 elephants are killed every year, a staggering 55 a day, mainly for the illegal ivory trade. If nothing is done to stop the killing, African elephants will probably disappear within the next decade.

In May 2016, Fondation de Brazzaville entered into a partnership with one of the leading elephant conservation groups, Stop Ivory, to support the Elephant Protection Initiativewhich aims to protect elephants and end the ivory trade. The Foundation helped secure the agreement of the Republic of Congo to support this initiative.

On this special day, the Brazzaville Foundation reiterates its support for the work of the Elephant Protection Initiative.
