Togo, the World Bank and the Brazzaville Foundation bring together African civil society on Girls' Education and Women's Empowerment

Lomé, 26 February 2025 - On 25 and 26 February, the Togolese capital hosted the first edition of a regional forum of civil society organisations (CSOs) dedicated to girls' education and women's economic empowerment. Organised by the World Bank in partnership with the Brazzaville Foundation, the event brought together CSOs from 22 countries in West and Central Africa.

At the official opening, Togo's Prime Minister H.E. Mrs. Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé recalled the importance of girls' education as a lever for social and economic transformation. She highlighted Togo's progress in this area and called for accelerated action to empower women. For his part, Ousmane Diagana, Regional Vice President of the World Bank, stressed the urgency of eliminating gender-related barriers, asserting that the World Bank is committed to promoting the inclusion of women, the key to economic development.

Working alongside institutions and civil society from the outset, the Brazzaville Foundation acted as a "conveyor belt", facilitating the participation of numerous NGOs and enriching the debates with its expertise. It also plays a central role in drawing up the forum's final report, ensuring that the recommendations were adapted to the realities on the ground.

 

The Foundation was represented by its Chief Executive Mr. Foulo Basse, who emphasised the mobilisation CSOs and the importance of establishing this direct dialogue between institutions and members of society in his introductory speech.

 

The Togolese authorities and organisers praised the commitment of the CSOs present and their essential role in implementing sustainable solutions.
