COP27 and Africa: Climate finance for the operationalisation of the African Union's climate commissions

On November 9, 2022 at the COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, a high-level meeting was held at the Congo Basin Blue Fund (F2BC) pavilion, under the chairmanship of H.R.H. Princess Lalla Hasnaa of Morocco, the fund's Goodwill Ambassador, with the Ministers of Environment representing the three climate commissions of the African Union: Congo Basin, Sahel region and island states.

These three commissions were set up during the Action Summit organised at the instigation of H.M. the King of Morocco, during COP22 in Marrakech. The aim of this multi-stakeholder meeting was to strengthen synergies between the three commissions through concerted action, and to ensure that the sovereignty of African states prevails in multilateral negotiations on climate change.
The Founding Chairman of the Brazzaville Foundation, Jean-Yves Ollivier, also Goodwill Ambassador of the fund, was represented by Richard Amalvy, Chief Executive. Maria Fatima Jardim, Angola's Ambassador to Rome and Goodwill Ambassador, was also present.
On this occasion, HRH Prince Lalla Hasnaa reiterated the Kingdom of Morocco's support for the governance of the Congo Basin Climate Commission (CBCC): "Morocco supports the development of the Blue Fund and deploys its expertise in the fight against climate change, notably through the Climate Change Competence Centre (4C Morocco)".
The main issue being the capture of the means offered by climate finance in favor ofoperationalisation of the F2BC and the probable launch of a fund dedicated to the Sahel, this meeting was held in the presence of representatives of Programme of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, Programme of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Development Bank of Central African States (BDEAC), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), and the technical partners, the Brazzaville Foundation, 4C Morocco and EY.
