Ghana launches its electronic pharmacy
On December 22 in Accra, Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana, announced the launch of a national e-pharmacy. This initiative will enable over 30 million Ghanaians to access prescribed medicines more conveniently, cost-effectively and avoid falsified and substandard medicines.
The national e-pharmacy, linked to the Food and Drugs Authority database, will authenticate the approval or non-approval of proposed drugs; monitor the activities of unlicensed pharmacies; reduce disparities in medicines' costs; improve the pharmacist-to-patient ratio; and facilitate delivery.
Soon to be operational in the new year 2022, the launch of this e-pharmacy is part of Ghana's commitment to the fight against falsified and substandard medicines, almost two years after signing the Lomé Initiative by the Ghanaian government.
Mahamudu Bawumia's statements can be consulted in the press release of the government.
